British and French military teams will be deployed to Ukraine<\/a> in \u2018coming days\u2019, Emmanuel Macron<\/a> has confirmed.<\/p>\n

The delegation from the UK and France<\/a> will be sent to work<\/a> with Ukrainian armed forces as part of a \u2018reassurance force\u2019, even if the idea is not backed by all European allies.<\/p>\n

This was revealed after a summit in Paris aimed at strengthening Ukraine\u2019s hand and its military, attended by Sir Keir Starmer, Volodymyr Zelensky and other Western leaders.<\/p>\n

\u2018In very specific terms, we agreed that the prime minister of Great Britain and I will instruct our chiefs of defence to ensure that a Franco-British team is sent to Ukraine within a few days for very close cooperation with our Ukrainian partners,\u2019 Macron told reporters earlier this afternoon.<\/p>\n

He made the announcement about the military delegation to Ukraine \u2013 but said the decision is \u2018not unanimous\u2019.<\/p>\n

Such a\u00a0force\u00a0would also not be a substitute for any peacekeeping soldiers on the ground maintaining any ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.<\/p>\n

\u2018Nothing has been ruled out, we will look at sea\u00a0forces, ground\u00a0forces and air\u00a0forces,\u2019 the French leader warned.<\/p>\n

\u2018This\u00a0reassurance\u00a0force\u00a0should not substitute the peacekeeping\u00a0forces on the contact line or the strong and robust Ukrainian army.\u2019<\/p>\n

agreed to such a plan but \u2018it is not up to Russia what happens on Ukrainian soil\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018So there will be a\u00a0reassurance\u00a0force\u00a0bringing together several European forces and it will be deployed,\u2019 Macron added.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Keir later described it as a \u2018deterrence force\u2019, saying: \u2018This is a force designed to deter, in order to send that message to Putin that this is a deal that is going to be defended \u2013 that\u2019s the best description of it.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>It remains unclear which European countries have agreed to sending a team to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>But the British PM stressed that US involvement is needed to proceed with the plan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Leaders in Paris also agreed that sanctions against Russia should not be lifted, and instead ramped up, until the war is halted.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Keir said there was \u2018complete clarity\u2019 that now is not the time for the lifting of sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Quite the contrary \u2013 what we discussed is how we can increase sanctions to support the US initiative to bring Russia to the table from further pressure,\u2019 he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Got a story?
