\u2018ticking timebomb\u2019, are now banned on the <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/london-underground\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/london-underground\/\">London Underground<\/a> and Overground due to fire risk. <\/p>\n<p>E-bike fires have caused concern among Londoners after incidents across the capital\u2019s stations. <\/p>\n<p>On average, there is an e-bike fire every other day in <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/london\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">London<\/a>, the fire brigade said. <\/p>\n<p>Last month, an e-bike <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/13\/london-underground-passengers-staff-at-risk-e-bikes-catching-fire-22718015\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/13\/london-underground-passengers-staff-at-risk-e-bikes-catching-fire-22718015\/\">went up in flames<\/a> moments before boarding a Tube carriage at Rayners Lane station, while an <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/04\/08\/e-bike-explodes-sutton-station-sending-flames-flying-platform-20605818\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/04\/08\/e-bike-explodes-sutton-station-sending-flames-flying-platform-20605818\/\">e-bike explosion<\/a> caused a fire at Sutton station in April. <\/p>\n<figure rail services for the \u2018safety of customers and staff.\u2019 However, cycling campaigners have warned a blanket ban could reduce the use of legitimate e-bikes.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a roundup of what <strong>March 31, 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Non-folded e-bikes are no longer accepted on most TfL services, including the Tube, <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/london-overground\/\" <\/p>\n<p>Enforcement officers will be deployed across the network to \u2018monitor and enforce compliance.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Anybody who does not comply may be refused entry, directed to leave the network, or face a fine of up to \u00a31,000, if prosecuted under the bylaws,\u2019 TfL told <strong>Metro<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why are e-bikes banned on the Tube? He told <strong>Metro<\/strong> previously that modified and old bikes are \u2018a ticking timebomb.\u2019 <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reaction to the e-bike ban<\/h2>\n<p>Charlie Pugsley, a London Fire Brigade\u2019s deputy commissioner, said they welcome the ban as it \u2018acknowledges\u00a0the risks that we\u00a0know e-bike batteries can pose.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>He said that while e-bikes can have \u2018sustainable benefits,\u2019 the reality \u2018is that \u2018across London\u00a0we\u00a0have been\u00a0seeing an e-bike or e-scooter fire\u00a0every other day, on average, and we have particular concern about the risk posed by conversion kits or modified e-bikes.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>However, cycling campaigners have criticised the blanket ban on all e-bikes on public transport.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Fyans, the London Cycling Campaign\u2019s chief executive, told <strong>Metro<\/strong>: \u2018Safety must always come first, but the risk is that measures like this could confuse people about the safety of genuine ebikes and reduce usage, which would be a big concern. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018The real issue is a total lack of control on the sale of dodgy conversion kits, batteries and the illegal modification of ebikes into mini motorbikes. Government, TfL and delivery companies need to get a grip on this issue and fast. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"592\" height=\"431\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22794241 lazyload\" alt=\"An e-bike bike going up in flames at Sutton Tube station.\" loading=\"lazy\" data-src=\"http:\/\/softnary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SEI_199018761-2482.jpg\">\t<\/div><figcaption>E-bike fires can be quick and aggressive because of the lithium battery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018No one wants to compromise the safety of passengers, but once again the easy answer appears to be removing cycle access rather than dealing with the bigger issue of meaningful regulation. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018As a result, battery fires are likely to keep happening and we will keep seeing dangerous, illegally modified bikes on our streets.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>James Metcalfe, the co-founder of Volt Bikes, told <strong>Metro <\/strong>that a blanket ban of all non-folded e-bikes on the TfL network is \u2018a huge setback for active and sustainable transport.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>He argued that \u2018ordinary commuters\u2019 will be hit and that the focus should be on \u2018education and enforcement, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Shaf Hussain, a delivery rider in London, claimed that low pay is \u2018reducing workers to making illegal upgrades to their bikes.\u2019 \u2018When you have to make more deliveries for less money, this is the inevitable result,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>Aslef, the train drivers\u2019 union, welcomed the announcement today after suggesting previously they would consider industrial action unless a ban was introduced. <\/p>\n<p>Finn Brennan, Aslef\u2019s full-time organiser on the Underground, said the ban will \u2018reduce the risk of a serious accident, and the dangers caused by large numbers of unfolded e-bikes blocking exits in emergencies. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018We are pleased that TfL have listened to our concerns and has now acted on them,\u2019 he added. <\/p>\n<p>London Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/sadiq-khan\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/sadiq-khan\/\">Sadiq Khan<\/a> said the \u2018small number\u2019 of incidents involving full-sized e-bikes catching fire on transport have caused him \u2018great concern.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018This is why, following a comprehensive review of the safety of e-bikes, TfL is banning all non-folding e-bikes on tube and rail services.
