data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">social media<\/a> to recruit Chinese soldiers to fight in Ukraine, President <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/volodymyr-zelenskyy\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">Volodymyr Zelensky<\/a> claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Two Chinese nationals fighting for <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/vladimir-putin\/\">Vladimir Putin<\/a>\u2019s Russian army were captured in Ukraine earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>Now Ukraine claims to have passport data for 155 of them fighting within its borders.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018These are Chinese citizens, they are fighting against us, using weapons against Ukrainians on the territory of Ukraine\u2019, Zelensky said.<\/p>\n<p>It unsurprisingly turned some heads. Around 12,000 North Korean troops have already been sent to the front to bolster Putin\u2019s forces within Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of Indian and Nepali men have been forced to join the fight after travelling to Russia as tourists or for work.<\/p>\n<p>But China has tried to portray itself as neutral in Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine. Could China be sending troops to Ukraine?<\/p>\n<p>China denies it. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said: \u2018The Chinese government always asks Chinese citizens to stay away from conflict zones, avoid getting involved in any form of armed conflict, and especially refrain from participating in any party\u2019s military operations.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the troops seem to be mercenaries recruited through social media.<\/p>\n<p>One captured soldier said he paid \u00a32,300 to a middleman in China to join. He claimed to be offered Russian citizenship in return.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Beijing knows about this\u2019, Zelensky said. \u2018Russians distribute advertising videos about recruitment through Chinese President Vladimir Putin\u2019s claim to want peace, despite US President Donald Trump\u2019s special envoy claiming a ceasefire is close.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Russian missiles killed four people and wounded 17, including a six-year-old girl and a boy, aged eight, in <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/03\/putin-ignores-trumps-call-peace-strikes-zelenskys-hometown-22842577\/\">Zelensky\u2019s hometown<\/a> of Kryvyi Rih.<\/p>\n<p>Zelensky said: \u2018All of the dead are civilians. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Everywhere in the world, such strikes are called the same: this is terror.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Foreign fighters are a feature on both sides of this war. Among them were James Wilton, 18 and from West Yorkshire, 22-year-old Callum Tindal-Draper from Cornwall, and Peter Fouch\u00e9 from West London, who <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/02\/26\/brits-remembered-heart-ukraine-frontline-deaths-fight-russia-22630641\/\">died fighting last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some are motivated by politics. Irish man Finbarr Cafferkey, who died fighting with Ukraine\u2019s foreign legion in Bakhmut in 2023, was involved with an anarchist group in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The 45-year-old had previously fought with Kurdish forces against the Islamic State in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>Others are motivated by money.
