to an end \u2013 but <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/ukraine\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/ukraine\/\">Ukraine<\/a> had dismissed the break in fighting from the start. <\/p>\n<p>The lull in fighting in the Russia-Ukraine war ended at 10pm UK time after the Russian president didn\u2019t order an extension to the temporary ceasefire. <\/p>\n<p>The world was holding its breath after Putin announced the truce to mark Easter.<\/p>\n<p>However, just hours into the truce, Russia was accused of breaking it by attacking Ukrainian soldiers again. <\/p>\n<figure \u2018attempting to create the general impression of a ceasefire\u2019 while continuing \u2018isolated attempts to advance\u2019 elsewhere on the frontline.<\/p>\n<p>A reporter shared by Ukraine\u2019s commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi claimed the Russian army violated the ceasefire \u2018more than 2,000 times.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Zelensky suggested Ukraine would be unable to maintain its side of the truce while attacks continue, saying: \u2018We will act in accordance with the actual situation on the ground.\u2019<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-player\">\n<div proposal, agreed with the US, for a 30-day ceasefire remains on the table.<\/p>\n<p>In a later post to mark Easter Sunday, Zelensky wrote: \u2018Evil may have its hour, but God will have His day.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>All military actions were told to halt for the duration of Sunday \u2013 shortly after Putin launched an\u00a0attack on a factory baking <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/18\/putins-deadly-easter-missile-onslaught-targets-cake-factory-injures-children-22931524\/\">Easter treats that led to one person being killed and another injured.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Traditional cakes, baked for the most important day in the Christian calendar, were seen littered among rubble and dust after the strike on the factory.<\/p>\n<figure href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/strikes\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">strike<\/a> on Palm Sunday that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said was \u2018right in the heart of the city\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>It killed 34 people, including two children and injured 117 others.<\/p>\n<p>There was an attempted Easter Truce in 2022, shortly after the war broke out that February, but it fell through. <\/p>\n<p>The US president Donald Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social as the truce ended, saying \u2018hopefully Russia and Ukraine will make a deal this week.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Both will then start to do big business with the United States of America, which is thriving, and make a fortune,\u2019 he wrote in capital letters. <\/p>\n<p>During the Easter weekend, Russian army allegedly attacked in Toretsk and Uspenivka in the Donetsk area, the village of Zoria, fighting near the village of Novopavlivka and infantry attacks near the city of Lyman. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A historic prisoner swap<\/h2>\n<p>Russia and Ukraine have\u00a0also swapped hundreds of prisoners in the war\u2019s largest exchange, according to Russia\u2019s Ministry of Defence.<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s Ministry of Defence said that 246 Russian service members were returned from territory controlled by Kyiv and that, \u2018as a gesture of goodwill\u2019, 31 wounded Ukrainian prisoners of war were transferred in exchange for 15 wounded Russian soldiers in need of urgent medical care.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr said that 277 Ukrainian \u2018warriors have returned home from Russian captivity.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The news came as Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a temporary Easter ceasefire in Ukraine, the Kremlin said on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes after yesterday, the <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/us-news\/\">US<\/a> suggested that if no progress was made with peace talks,<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/18\/us-may-move-on-russia-ukraine-peace-talks-no-progress-soon-22935388\/\"> they would \u2018move on\u2019 from the
