her name to escape from her stalker \u2013 her father \u2013 only to be found by him.<\/p>\n<p>Anna endured years of harassment, threats and stalking from her dad, who was out to \u2018wreak havoc\u2019 on the life she had built with her partner, Stuart.<\/p>\n<p>He often used <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/12\/03\/victims-get-right-learn-identity-online-stalker-22104124\/\">personas to target the couple <\/a>over the phone or in letters, pretending to be a company owner and even a tabloid journalist. <\/p>\n<p>Anna felt she had little choice but to pack up and leave her village after her stalker mailed letters full of \u2018vile things\u2019 about them to neighbours. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018We thought he\u2019s not going to be able to find us in the whole country,\u2019 Anna said in a video shared yesterday by Cambridgeshire Police. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018But he found us.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"646\" height=\"342\" Persistent <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/smartphones\/\">phone<\/a> calls, sending hostile texts and posting abusive messages on social media are some examples of harassment. <\/p>\n<p>Stalking \u2013 where the stalker has an obsession with the person they\u2019re targeting \u2013 can include turning up uninvited at someone\u2019s home, spying on them or following them.<\/p>\n<p>For victims, these acts cause long-lasting emotional distress as their lives become marked by fear and hypervigilance. Sometimes, stalking can take a toll on the body, including dizziness, headaches and heart palpitations. <\/p>\n<p>There are many reasons why people stalk. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stalkingriskprofile.com\/what-is-stalking\/types-of-stalking\">Stalking Risk Profile<\/a>, a risk\u00a0assessment guide for investigators, says motivations include rejection, power, loneliness, as well as indifference to the victim\u2019s emotions. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But it was when he posted letters not only to the couple\u2019s neighbours but the entire village that Anna and Stuart knew they had to escape.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We really started thinking seriously about what we need to do about this,\u2019 Anna said. <\/p>\n<p>Anna shared her story for National Stalking Awareness Week, which runs until Friday, to encourage victims to get support. <\/p>\n<p>Anna said that she and Stuart had long discussed reporting the stalking to the police.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018But every time we thought it would just be a red rag to a bull and that it would make him worse,\u2019 she said. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018We didn\u2019t know how, once he\u2019d been reported to the police, how we could react to what he would do.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"646\" height=\"342\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22954667 lazyload\" alt=\"For several years, Anna and Stuart were on the receiving end of many abusive letters and phone calls It escalated to vicious calls to their employers, neighbours and the local pub.
