Thousands of primary school<\/a> children will be given a free breakfast at school for the first time this morning.<\/p>\n

The first 750 schools \u2013 75 of which are in London<\/a> \u2013 in the Labour government<\/a>\u2019s project are dishing up cereal and yoghurts for the first time as a pilot before the measure is rolled out across the country.<\/p>\n

Schools will now open about half an hour earlier to provide both the breakfast club and an extra 30 minutes of childcare before lessons begin.<\/p>\n

Bridget Phillipson<\/a>, the Education Secretary, said previously the free breakfast clubs will help to break the link \u2018between background and success\u2019.<\/p>\n

But teachers are concerned that the government\u2019s funding won\u2019t cover the full cost of the scheme.<\/p>\n

Some schools already run a breakfast club, but it\u2019s not currently compulsory for schools to offer this.<\/p>\n

Coming into effect today the scheme will see 750 state primary schools, serving 180,000 children, offer a breakfast which is encouraged to be healthy, balanced and nutritious.<\/p>\n

If it\u2019s a success it\u2019s hoped the scheme will be rolled out to every school in England.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: \u2018As a parent, I know that the combined pressures of family life and work can often feel impossible to juggle. <\/p>\n

\u2018That is why our manifesto promised to make parents lives easier and put more money in their pockets with free breakfast clubs.<\/p>\n
