accept a proposal for a 30-day ceasefire \u2013 but says the <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/us-news\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">US<\/a> \u2018must convince\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/russia\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">Russia<\/a> to agree to it as well.<\/p>\n<p><a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/volodymyr-zelenskyy\/\">Volodymyr Zelensky<\/a> made the statement after a meeting between senior US and Ukrainian officials in Jeddah, <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/saudi-arabia\/\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>, earlier today.<\/p>\n<p>He said <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/ukraine\/\">Ukraine<\/a> has been seeking peace \u2018from the very first second of this war\u2019 and hopes to achieve it in a reliable way \u2018so that war does not return\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>During the meeting with US officials, Ukraine proposed three key points \u2013 silence in the skies, silence at sea, and the release of prisoners of war and detainees.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Zelensky added: \u2018Ukraine is ready to accept this proposal \u2013 we see it as a positive step and are ready to take it.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Ukraine is ready for peace. Russia must show its readiness to end the war or continue the war. It is time for the full truth.<\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\" data-ico=\"factbox_article\" data-track-module=\"factbox_article\">\n<h2 class=\"factbox-title\">\n\t\t\t\tThree ‘key points’ proposed by Ukrainian officials during peace talks with US\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<div class=\"factbox-content\">\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Silence in the skies \u2013 stopping missile strikes, bombs, and long-range drone attacks<\/li>\n<li>Silence at sea <\/li>\n<li>Real confidence-building measures in this whole situation, in which diplomacy is ongoing, which primarily means the release of prisoners of war and detainees\u2014both military and civilian\u2014and the return of Ukrainian children who were forcibly transferred to Russia.<\/li>\n<\/ol><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u2018Now, it is up to the United States to convince Russia to do the same. If Russia agrees, the ceasefire will take effect immediately.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Following the meetings, US secretary of state Marco Rubio said America will now \u2018take this offer\u2019 to Russia, adding that \u2018the ball is in their court\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>He and national security adviser Mike Waltz confirmed president Donald Trump has lifted <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/05\/trump-cuts-off-us-intelligence-ukrainian-forces-frontline-22673528\/\">a pause on aid and security assistance<\/a> to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Rubio added that Trump \u2018wanted this war to end yesterday\u2019 and said he hopes Russia will accept the ceasefire deal \u2018as soon as possible\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We\u2019re going to tell them this is what\u2019s on the table. Ukraine is ready to stop shooting and start talking. And now it\u2019ll be up to them to say yes or no,\u201d Mr Rubio said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018If they say no, then we\u2019ll unfortunately know what the impediment is to peace here.\u2019<\/p>\n<div delegations earlier today confirmed the two countries will conclude<a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/02\/keir-starmer-says-felt-uncomfortable-watching-white-house-clash-22652776\/\"> a minerals deal<\/a> \u2018as soon as possible\u2019 after relations between them soured following <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/02\/28\/trump-meets-zelensky-white-house-crucial-talks-future-ukraine-22641642\/\">a highly confrontational meeting<\/a> in the White House.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Zelensky said the discussion between Ukraine and the US was \u2018good and constructive\u2019 and lasted for most of the day.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u2018I am grateful to President Trump for the constructive conversation between our teams.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018During today\u2019s talks, the US side proposed taking an even bigger first step \u2013 a 30-day full interim ceasefire, not only stopping missile, drone and bomb attacks, not only in the Black Sea, but also along the entire front line.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called the talks a \u2018remarkable breakthrough\u2019 and also said the ball is now in Russia\u2019s court.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u2018I warmly welcome the agreement today in Jeddah and congratulate President Trump and President Zelensky for this remarkable breakthrough.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018This is an important moment for peace in Ukraine and we now all need to redouble our efforts to get to a lasting and secure peace as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018As both American and Ukrainian delegations have said, the ball is now in the Russian court.
