data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/emmanuel-macron\/\">Emmanuel Macron<\/a> has called for a \u2018united Europe\u2019 to stand up to <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/russia-ukraine-conflict\/\">Russian aggression<\/a> by spending billions more on defence.<\/p>\n<p>In a television address tonight, he said the world was entering a \u2018new era\u2019 and a \u2018global conflict\u2019 was already underway.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Macron suggested the French Army would lead the defence of the continent, adding: \u2018We have the most effective army in the whole of Europe, and nuclear capacity. We have been developing our army since the Second World War.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Our nuclear deterrent protects us: it\u2019s complete, sovereign, French through and through.
