JD Vance<\/a> has been accused of insulting British soldiers who died in Iraq and Afghanistan with his comments on Europe\u2019s contributions to Ukraine<\/a> peace talks.<\/p>\n

The US Vice President dismissively described a proposed peacekeeping force suggested by European leaders as \u201820,000 troops from some random country that hasn\u2019t fought a war in 30 or 40 years\u2019.<\/p>\n

France and the UK are the only two countries that have currently committed to putting soldiers on the ground in Ukraine to help avert a threat from Russia.<\/p>\n

Critics pointed out that Vance\u2019s \u201930 or 40 years\u2019 covers the time British forces fought alongside their US allies in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

Liberal Democrat MP Helen Maguire, a former Captain in the Royal Military Police who served in Iraq, said: \u2018JD Vance is erasing from history the hundreds of British troops who gave their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

\u2018I saw firsthand how American and British soldiers fought bravely together shoulder to shoulder. <\/p>\n

\u2018Six of my own regiment, the Royal Military Police, didn\u2019t return home from Iraq. This is a sinister attempt to deny that reality.\u2019<\/p>\n

Former Defence Minister Johnny Mercer described Vance as a \u2018clown\u2019 and said: \u2018By his own admission he spent his time in the Marines \u201cwriting articles and taking pictures\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u2018Perhaps if he had got his hands dirty serving his country like so many of his fellow American and British veterans, chasing his own country\u2019s crazy foreign policy ideas, he might not be so quick to dismiss their sacrifice.\u2019<\/p>\n

Despite the UK and France being the only two countries that have made the commitment, Vance described the suggestion he was referring to them in his comments as \u2018absurdly dishonest\u2019.<\/p>\n

He wrote in a post on X: \u2018I don\u2019t even mention the UK or France in the clip, both of whom have fought bravely alongside the US over the last 20 years, and beyond.\u2019<\/p>\n

data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> paused all <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/us-news\/\">US<\/a> military aid shipments to <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/ukraine\/\">Ukraine<\/a> just days after <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/02\/keir-starmer-says-felt-uncomfortable-watching-white-house-clash-22652776\/\">clashing with<\/a> <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/volodymyr-zelenskyy\/\">Volodymyr Zelensky<\/a> at <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/white-house\/\">the White House<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There has not yet been any indication how long the pause will last, nor has there been any comment from Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>This afternoon, Downing Street revealed that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called Trump last night before the President made the decision.<\/p>\n<p>A senior <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/white-house\/\">White House<\/a> official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: \u2018President [Trump] has been clear that he is focused on peace.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We need our partners to be committed to that goal as well. We are pausing and reviewing our aid to ensure that it is contributing to a solution.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The decision came just hours after Trump publicly berated Ukrainian president Zelensky for suggesting that any notion of a peace plan with Russia \u2018is still very, very far away\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to his remarks on social media, Trump described Zelensky\u2019s words as the \u2018worst statement that could have been made.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It is what I was saying, this guy doesn\u2019t want there to be peace as long as he has America\u2019s backing and, Europe, in the meeting they had with Zelensky, stated flatly that they cannot do the job without the US \u2013 probably not a great statement to have been made in terms of a show of strength against Russia.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018What are they thinking?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He later said European countries had \u2018acted very well\u2019 and were \u2018good people\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We\u2019re going to make deals with everybody to get this war (finished), including Europe and European nations. And they\u2019ve acted very well. You know, they\u2019re good people \u2026 they want to work it out,\u2019 Mr Trump said at the White House.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"481\" height=\"231\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22663050 lazyload\" alt=\"Trump pauses ALL military aid to Ukraine after clash with Zelensky & accuses him of making ?worst statement possible?\" loading=\"lazy\" data-src=\"http:\/\/softnary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SEI_242431805-1875-e1741070202441.jpg\">\t<\/div><figcaption>Trump\u2019s statement on Ukraine on Truth Social (Picture: Truth Social)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Zelensky responded to Trump\u2019s outburst by posting on X that Ukraine was \u2018working together with America and our European partners and very much hope on US support on the path to peace\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Peace is needed as soon as possible,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said: \u2018We won\u2019t be blindsided or bounced from the focus of getting peace for Ukraine with those security guarantees.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>She said Trump\u2019s decision was a \u2018matter for the US President\u2019 and emphasised the importance of maintaining discussions with the White House.<\/p>\n<p>During an interview with Fox News\u2019 Sean Hannity early on Tuesday, Vance accused Zelensky of \u2018needling\u2019 Trump and having a \u2018certain sense of entitlement\u2019 during their now-infamous talks at the White House last week<\/p>\n<p>The Vice President said the encounter, which happened in front of the media, \u2018really set Zelensky off\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018He showed a clear unwillingness to engage in the peace process that President Trump said is the policy,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018That\u2019s the real breakdown. I think Zelensky wasn\u2019t yet there. And frankly, still isn\u2019t there. But I think he\u2019ll get there eventually, he has to.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Vance confirmed Ukrainian officials made at least one attempt to restart negotiations after leaving the White House, but efforts were shut down by Trump.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"636\" height=\"358\" House<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He also used the interview as an opportunity to criticise Europe\u2019s approach to the Ukraine war, suggesting leaders were saying different things in public than they were in private.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Hannity, he said: \u2018Here\u2019s the problem with the Europeans \u2026 they need to be realistic and the craziest part about this, Sean, is sometimes you have European heads of state who in public will puff up their chest and say, \u2018We\u2019re in this with President Zelensky for the next 10 years.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018And in private they\u2019ll pick up the phone and say, \u201cThis can\u2019t go on forever, he has to come to the negotiating table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I honestly don\u2019t care what the Europeans say in public, what I care is what they say in private.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018And what they need to be saying to President Zelensky is this can\u2019t go on forever, the bloodshed, the killing, the economic devastation, it\u2019s remains \u2018absolutely committed\u2019 to securing peace and will be \u2018engaging with key allies in support of this effort\u2019<\/p>\n<p>A Government spokesperson said: \u2018We remain absolutely committed to securing a lasting peace in Ukraine and are engaging with key allies in support of this effort.
