He has since been removed from the tower (Picture: Rasid Necati Aslim\/Anadolu via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A man has been charged after a protester was spotted climbing up the clock tower of <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/big-ben\/\">Big Ben<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Day, of Palmerston Road, Westcliff-on-Sea in <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/essex\/\">Essex<\/a>, has been charged with intentionally or recklessly causing a public nuisance and trespassing on a protected site.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/london\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">London<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/metropolitan-police\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">Metropolitan Police<\/a> said Day is accused of scaling Elizabeth Tower barefoot at around 7.20am on Saturday, and then coming down just after midnight on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>He was remanded in custody and appeared at Westminster Magistrates\u2019 Court earlier today.<\/p>\n<p>He only spoke to confirm his identity, and he did not enter any pleas.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Annabel Pilling remanded Day into custody until his next court appearance on March 17.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses reported seeing a protester climbing up the famous landmark at around 11.30am.<\/p>\n<p>He was seen carrying a Palestinian flag while sitting on the ledge barefoot.<\/p>\n<p>The man remained on the tower for more than 16 hours before being lifted to the ground in a cherry picker just after midnight.<\/p>\n<p>Westminster Bridge was forced to close to traffic during the incident and tourists were seen standing around the area and watching.<\/p>\n<p>Tours of the clock tower, which is officially known as the Elizabeth Tower, were cancelled yesterday as police dealt with the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle has ordered a review following a security incident on the Big Ben clock tower.<\/p>\n<p>He told MPs: \u2018I\u2019ve asked for a review to be undertaken of Saturday\u2019s incident.
