href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/russia\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">Russia<\/a>\u2019s capital with a homemade \u2018Long Neptune\u2019 missile it claims to have successfully used in combat.<\/p>\n<p>Long reliant on foreign military aid for missile supplies, <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/ukraine\">Ukraine<\/a> was <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/11\/18\/close-wwiii-us-allows-use-missiles-strike-inside-russia-22013339\/\">restricted<\/a> in where it could fire weapons like Atacms, for fear of sparking escalation.<\/p>\n<p>Until November, the USA had banned it from striking targets within Russian territory, leaving it to <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/06\/rare-insight-secret-ukrainian-unit-striking-putins-war-machine-1-240-miles-inside-russia-22679408\/\">Ukrainian-made drones<\/a> to hit the factories and bases fuelling <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/vladimir-putin\/\">Vladimir Putin<\/a>\u2019s war effort.<\/p>\n<p>With the new <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/us-news\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">US<\/a> President <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">Donald Trump<\/a> withdrawing military aid to Ukraine, the country has become increasingly desperate to boost its own domestic weapons production capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Cue the so-called \u2018Long Neptune\u2019, which \u2018has been tested and successfully used in combat\u2019, President Volodymyr Zelensky said today.<\/p>\n<p>Originally designed as an anti-ship missile, it has a range of 1,000km \u2013 double that of Britain\u2019s Storm Shadow, hundreds of which have been supplied to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s far enough to strike Moscow, Russia\u2019s capital city, roughly 842km away from Ukraine\u2019s border.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img Ukraine won\u2019t have to rely on the sometimes unreliable support of foreign allies, because Long Neptune is made in Ukraine by Luch Design Bureau.<\/p>\n<p>Zelensky said: \u2018Thank you to our Ukrainian developers, manufacturers and military. We continue to work to guarantee Ukrainian security.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Where the new missile was used has not been officially confirmed, but there has been some speculation online.<\/p>\n<p>Tens of explosions turned a major oil refinery in Tuapse, Russia, into a <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/14\/russia-rocked-another-drone-onslaught-close-putins-1-000-000-000-palace-22725440\/\">glowing fireball emitting thick, black smoke<\/a> in the early hours of Friday. (Ukrainian Emergency Service via AP)\" loading=\"lazy\" data-src=\"http:\/\/softnary.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SEI_243805301-b2e1.jpg\">\t<\/div><figcaption>Russian drones hit this civilian hotel in Zolochiv, Kharkiv, on Friday, Ukrainian authorities said (Picture: Ukrainian Emergency Service via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018There is an assumption that it was [the new] Neptune\u2019, Ukrainian Telegram channel Exilenova+ said.<\/p>\n<p>A previous incarnation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2022\/04\/14\/russia-says-flagship-ship-moskva-has-sunk-following-missile-strike-16471470\/\">Neptune sank the flagship of Russia\u2019s Black Sea fleet \u2013 the Moskva<\/a> \u2013 in April 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Built in 1980s Ukraine, when it was still part of the Soviet Union, the Moskva had bombarded cities like Odesa and Mykolaiv.<\/p>\n<p>It made headlines when a Ukrainian soldier stationed on Snake Island responded to its threats by saying: \u2018Go f*** yourself, Russian warship.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Moskva was the second major Russian ship destroyed in the conflict.
