A man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly ‘attacking a prisoner with a claw hammer.’

Damien Bendall, 35, is accused of bludgeoning an inmate’s head in a prison workshop at Frankland Prison in Durham.

Bendall has been charged with attempted murder after the attack allegedly happened in May last year.

Sources told The Sun was ‘allegedly hit three or four times with a claw hammer’.

Durham Constabulary said: ‘A man has been charged following a serious assault at Frankland prison, in Durham, on Friday, May 10, last year.

‘Damien Bendall, of no fixed abode, has been charged with attempted murder.

‘The 35-year-old has been remanded in custody and will appear at Teesside Crown Court on Thursday, May 21.

‘The victim sustained serious head injuries and was taken to hospital but is now recovering.’

Bendall appeared at Teesside Crown Court on 4 March but did not enter a plea.
