A shoplifter has been ordered out of Cambridgeshire after he was caught trying to nick £220 in Creme Eggs from a petrol station.

Deon De Groot, 26, had so many shoved in his duffel bag and jacket that when asked what he had stolen, he said that there were so many ‘they’re all going to fall out.’

A police officer responded: ‘Christ you’ve really loaded this up’.

De Groot was spotted carrying out the theft by a member of staff at the Tesco petrol station in Dogsthorpe, Peterborough, on Saturday morning.

They flagged down a passing police car who followed De Groot before taking him into custody.

Not only had he dropped his duffel bag nearby, containing several boxes of Creme Eggs, but he had also shoved several of the chocolate eggs into his jacket.

It’s thought the chocolate eggs were worth £220.50 in total.

De Groot, of no fixed address, admitted one charge of theft from a shop.

He appeared at Peterborough magistrates’ court where he was handed a 12-week suspended prison sentence.

He was also banned from entering Cambridgeshire for three months.

PC Guy Cunningham, who made the arrest, said: ‘Thanks to the quick reaction by staff who flagged us down, we were able to catch De Groot red-handed and return the stolen items to the store.’
