Convicted killer John Mansfield has been found dead in a high security prison where he was held.

Mansfield was found found dead at HMP Whitemoor near March, Cambridgeshire, on Sunday.

He was jailed for life in 2007 for the murder of his 63-year-old neighbour Ann Alfanso.

A 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering Mansfield at the prison.

The killing allegedly happened inside the prison’s close supervision centre.

A Cambridgeshire Police spokesperson said: ‘A 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. An investigation is ongoing.’

A Prison Service spokesperson added: ‘Police are investigating the death of prisoner John Mansfield at HMP Whitemoor on Sunday, April 13.

‘It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.’

Mansfield was sentenced in 2007 to life in prison with a minimum term of 30 years for her murder.

Ann Alfanso, who suffered from reduced mobility, was found dead at her home in Whalley Range, Manchester, by her carer in August 2006. She had been stabbed around 20 times in the head and neck.

Mansfield received a second life sentence in 2014 after he stabbed another inmate with a broken plate during chores.

The judge told him that he was a ‘violent and very dangerous man who poses a considerable threat to the public’ and that it was unlikely that he would ever be released.

The news comes after Hashem Abedi, the Manchester Arena terrorist allegedly attacked three prison officers with hot oil and home-made weapons at HMP Frankland in County Durham.

The Prison Officers’ Association (POA) said he also stabbed them with ‘homemade weapons’ on Saturday.

The officers sustained life-threatening injuries including burns, scalds and stab wounds.

Two of them sustained ‘severe stab wounds’ but are in a stable condition in hospital.
